Common pet cremation questions

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • What is cremation?

Cremation and burial are the two main ways the remains of a person or animal are finally farewelled. Where burial lays the body to rest in the ground, cremation works by burning the body at extremely high temperatures.

In many cultures, cremation serves as a funeral ritual.

  • Why choose Pet cremation?

Pet Cremation is a dignified and affordable way to say goodbye to loved ones. It is a humane, effective and practical way to treat the remains of a person or animal once they have died.

  • What are the types of pet cremation?

While there is limited and experimental practice of chemical cremation, the most traditional and well known form of cremation is cremation by burning.

  • How to do get my pet to a pet crematory?

Most of the top pet cremators will offer a collection service where they come to your house or to a nominated vet practice. The cremation business will transfer your pet to their crematorium, where they will complete the cremation.

  • What pets do you not cremate?

Pets to Rest cremates all types of household pet, from guinea pigs and bunny rabbits to cats and dogs. Horses require a larger cremator and can be cremated by specialist crematoria.

  • What should I do if my pet dies at home?

If your pet dies at home, call a reliable, reputable pet cremator like Pets to Rest to arrange a quick, careful and dignified cremation. The crematorium should be able to discuss the full process with you over the phone and answer any questions you might have.

  • Can you do other types of pet cremations?

Pets to Rest focuses on cremations that use the burning method. Not only is this a tried and tested approach to farewelling your loved one, it is extremely reliable and cost effective.

  • Where should i place my pet when it has died and I don't know if i want to bury or cremate it?

We recommend you carefully wrap your pet in a blanket or towel while you wait for a driver to arrive. Then just make sure you keep your pet out of the sun and somewhere as cool as possible.

  • Can I scatter my ashes where ever I want?

The best place to scatter ashes is outside, where the ashes will be carried away somewhere appropriate by the wind.

  • Is cremation better than burying my pet?

Some people opt to bury their pet, but those people usually have not only space in their backyard to do so, but also the tools and the know how to dig an appropriate grave. Many people find cremation to be a much more suitable alternative, which also gives you the option of storing or displaying your pet’s ashes as a keepsake.

  • Is it possible to pre-arrange your pet’s cremation?

Yes, many pet owners begin the realisation their pet is in the final stages of life some weeks out. Pets to Rest can work with your local vet to make sure we have a representative in place at a time that suits you.

  • Are all pet crematories the same?

No, you should choose your pet crematorium carefully. Pets to Rest treats every pet we cremate as though they are our very own. The team at Pets to Rest know that losing a pet means losing a member of the family. Each pet is handled with the greatest of care and cremated individually. The ashes are then carefully transferred to a commemorative receptacle or scatter box.

  • My pet passed away at the veterinarian’s office. Can I select where my pet is cremated?

Yes, you can always choose which crematorium will be best suited to your needs. But bear in mind that most vets will have an arrangement in place with a single pet crematorium. So if you wish your cremation to be taken care of by a particular crematorium, make sure you let your vet or practice manager know.

  • How can I be sure that I will correctly get my pet’s ashes back?

Pets to Rest prides itself on paying the greatest attention to detail and we realise that in an area as sensitive as pet cremation, there is no room for error. Pets to Rest has a thorough logistics and quality control program in place, as well a safeguards to prevent errors.

  • Pre-arranged pet cremations

Whether it’s a family member or a beloved pet, losing a loved one is one of the hardest things many of us will ever go through.  We never want to imagine a world without them and preparing for their death can be extremely hard.

More and more Pets to Rest clients are choosing to pre-arrange their pet’s cremation: some because of what they describe as debilitating grief; others because they want to know in advance that the end of their pet’s life will be orderly, dignified and compassionate.

By making this decision ahead of time, you can rest assured you have given due consideration to everything: who will collect your pet?  Where will the cremation occur?  Do I want to receive the ashes back?  What kind of urn or commemorative box should I choose?

  • In-home pet euthanasia

If there is one thing more painful than losing your pet, it can be knowing that your pet is in pain or discomfort.  One decision every owner will face at some point is how they should manage the end of their pet’s life.

An in-home euthanasia is one option to consider.  Not only does this enable you to farewell your pet with love and dignity, it allows you to say goodbye in the comfort of your own home, surrounded by friends and family and somewhere your pet feels most calm.   Talk to Pets to Rest about the highly experienced and compassionate euthanasia vet we work with to see if this option is right for you.

  • A how-to guide for arranging cremation

What do I do when planning a cremation?

If the death of your pet comes as a surprise, please pick up the phone and give us a call.  We can come straight out to see at any time, day or night.

    Talk to your vet

Mostly, however, you will be aware ahead of time that you are going to have to say goodbye.  Talk to your vet and let them know what your preferences are.  If it’s all too much, call Pets to Rest and we can liaise directly with your vet on your behalf.

Select from one of our individual cremation packages

While some crematoriums offer group cremations, at Pets to Rest every cremation we undertake is an individual cremation.  So choose from a scatter package, a premium farewell package or an ashes-to-plant package.

Select an urn or commemorative receptacle

Pets to Rest has a wide selection of urns and commemorative items to choose from.  They are all extremely high quality and covered by warranty.  Choose from a photo box, a paw print box, a pewter urn and more.  Or maybe you just want to scatter the ashes?  If that’s the case, you might prefer a simple scatter box.

Decide where you want to scatter your pet’s ashes

Did your pet have a favourite park or tree?  Did your dog love taking a walk along the cliffs or beach somewhere?  Perhaps you’d like to scatter your pet’s ashes in the ocean.  There is no right answer to this question.  Choose somewhere that feels right and that is, for whatever reason, meaningful to you.

  • Payment plans for pet cremation

    Managing the financial burden

While it is always a shock when your pet dies, often their passing comes as no surprise.  But often we find that people haven’t planned ahead and are faced with the difficulty about how to say goodbye in a way that honoured their pet’s memory.

    Prepayment plans

At Pets to Rest, we have seen how hard it is for people to think about money when they are experiencing grief.  We therefore have pre-prepared options available to you so you can plan ahead.

Purchase a package of your choice, receive a 10 per cent discount on prepayments, arrange a payment plan – and if you change your mind for whatever reason, receive a full refund, no questions asked.
